Fact-Check: Was Former Chief of Army Staff, Dambazzau, Arrested by DSS in Kano?

The social media has been awash with news and photos of the former Chief of Army Staff and immediate past Interior Minister, Lt. General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazzau (Rtd) claiming that he had been arrested in Kano by the secret police following media reports that that one “General Dambazzau,” was in the custody of Department of States Service (DSS).

VERDICT:

The person arrested is a retired Brigadier General Idris Bello Dambazau, Chairman, Kano State Consumer Protection Council over alleged unilateral closure of seven petroleum filling stations without following due process.

Though he bears the same surname with the Former Interior Minister, both retired military officers are brothers from the same family.

Both retired military are politicians. Idris was Special Duties Commissioners during the tenure of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. After his appointment as the head of Kano Consumer Protection Council, he vowed to protect consumers’ rights by curtailing the circulation of fake and expired products in the society.

Meanwhile, security sources told PRNigeria that since his recent appointment, Idris engaged in activities that could create scarcity of products in Kano State by failing to comply with relevant sections of the on regulations, guidelines, enforcement order or directives.

His brother, Lt General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau was former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) between 2008 and 2010. He had served as Director In Charge of Intelligence and Security of the APC Presidential Campaign in 2015 and was subsequently appointed Minister of Interior during the first tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015 and 2019.
