Gunmen kill police officer, injure others in attack on Ebonyi lawmaker
EMERGENCY DIGEST- One policeman was feared dead, another missing and four others injured during an attack in Effium Community of Ebonyi State.
They were attacked alongside members representing Ohaukwu North constituency in Ebonyi Assembly, Hon. Chinedu Awo.
The four wounded policemen were rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki where they are receiving treatment.
A source confirmed that two of the policemen have successfully undergone surgery at the hospital while a senior Police officer, who led the team and was shot on the leg, had asked to be discharged.
Hon Awo is said to be stable after he was treated at the hospital.
They were reportedly attacked at Effium where they went in search of a kidnapped Consultant handling the Ebonyi ring road project who was abducted alongside four others three weeks ago.

It was gathered that the lawmaker led the team to confirm the report that the kidnapped victims may have been killed and buried.
They were said to be on their way when the hoodlums opened fire on them.
Effium, which he represents in the House of Assembly, has been enmeshed in an intra-communal war between the Ezza-Effium and Effium people.
The war has claimed hundreds of lives with property worth billions destroyed.
Three weeks ago, a Consultant handling the Ebonyi ring road project and four others, were kidnapped along the Effium axis of the ring road while supervising the project.
They are yet to be found as at the time of filing this report.
Also some 17 persons were said to have been killed in the area in an attack on residents by gunmen.
Police spokesperson Loveth Odah said she will be called back after the Police weekly management meeting.
She was yet to do so at the time of filling this report.
However, a Consultant to the State Government on Internal Security, Stanley Okoro Emegha, confirmed the attack on the lawmaker and the killing of the policeman.
