Panic as gunmen raze Imo ex-lawmaker’s country home, abduct five

Some gun-wielding hoodlums have razed the country home of a former Imo State lawmaker, Gozie Nwagba.

The incident, which happened at the Obor community in the Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, forced many to flee their homes.

Nwagbo, is a former leader of Orlu legislative council.

PUNCH correspondent gathered that apart from burning the politician’s house, the attackers abducted five persons from the community.

They equally burnt the palace of the traditional ruler of the community, Raphael Ekezie.

An indigene of the area, Precious Nwadike, who is the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state, in a statement condemned the killings and wanton destruction of property in the area, calling for an end to violence.

He said, “I woke up this morning (Saturday) to be informed of another attack in the Obor community that saw the house of a former leader of Orlu Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Nwagba Gozie, and that of HRH Eze Ralph Ekezie razed by arsonists.

“This is never the Orlu of our dreams. It is about time our people who are still alive to their responsibilities began to ask questions. A few weeks ago, it was Omekagu Darlington, a promising lawyer, who was shot dead at close range by unidentified persons. Today, in addition to burning houses in Obor community, five people were abducted. Should we all die in silence?”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Michael Abattam, did not pick up our correspondent’s calls to his line.
