Gunmen attack police post in Enugu, kill two, injure three

Suspected gunmen attacked a police security post in Enugu killing two operatives of the state’s Police Command and injuring three others in the process.

The policemen were said to be on duty at a checkpoint at Nachi in Oji River local government of the state when the gunmen unexpectedly attacked and shot at them.

They were said to have died on the spot while the sound of gunshots caused pandemonium as commuters on the road scamper for safety.

The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the incident. He also said the command had commenced actions to track down the killers of the cops.

In his words, “Full-scale investigation that will lead to fishing out of the assailants has commenced. Further development will be communicated, please.”

The incident is the latest in what appears to be a growing trend of attacks on police stations and security personnel in the South-East region of the country.

It can be recalled that gunmen recently attacked operatives of Awada Divisional Police Station in Anambra who were carrying out a routine stop-and-search in the area considered as a flashpoint. An officer and two civilians were killed in the attack as the gunmen also burnt the police van at the scene.
