COVID-19: Five died, 559 fresh cases  recorded in Nigeria 

EMERGENCY DIGEST- The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the infections in an update on its Facebook page late Wednesday. According to the NCDC, 2,578 persons have died due to complications from the disease.

Wednesday’s infections were confirmed in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Nigeria’s COVID-19 epicentre, Lagos, had the highest number of cases for the day 232, followed by Rivers State with 83 persons infected with the virus.

Enugu has infected 66 people,  Oyo  28, Kaduna  25, FCT 24,  Delta 22 and Akwa Ibom 19.

Other states with new cases include Kwara  18, Ekiti  13, Bayelsa 9, Cross River 9, Ogun 6, Kano 3 and Gombe 2.

More Doses Arrive

As the battle to contain the pandemic continues, the Federal Government said it has received 39,800,000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Faisal Shuaib told journalists on Monday in Abuja that the new doses were received on Saturday.

According to him, the single-shot vaccine was obtained through the African Vaccine Acquisition Team (AVAT) which is a facility provided by AFREXIMBANK.

“As at September 6 2021, a total of 3,600,858 eligible Nigerians have so far received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine,” he explained. “This is made up of 2,551,738 persons vaccinated with AstraZeneca vaccine and 1,049,120 persons vaccinated with Moderna vaccine.”
