How Job seeker was trafficked from Kano to Libya
A Jobseeker has narrated how her pastor sent her to Kano from where she was trafficked to Libya.
In Libya, upon discovery that she was a virgin, her masters got men to rape her repeatedly.
The girl, whose identity is protected, said her ordeal started in 2010 when she ran away in search of her mother, following “severe abuse” by someone with whom she was living.
But upon finding her mother, it soon dawned on them that she could not look after her, and that she needed to find a job.
They went to see their pastor who promised to take her to someone in Kano who would give her a comfortable job.
She ended up in Libya, she said.

“When they found out that I was a virgin as soon as we got to Libya, they brought in men to rape me so that I wouldn’t have any choice but to do the work. I passed through hell until I was rescued by National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after my mother reported my case to their office in Lagos and I was returned to Nigeria. NAPTIP sponsored me to university and today I am useful to myself and society.”
Another girl was trafficked to Saudi Arabia in 2016, her passport and phone seized at the airport, and was turned into a domestic slave by her masters and sold from one household to another, it was said.
She was eventually rescued by NAPTIP and International Organisation for Migration (IOM), it was learnt.
United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon said, “Despite significant efforts, Nigeria continues to be a country of origin, transit and destination for victims of human trafficking and one of the countries with the highest number of detected human trafficking victims.”
