SERAP, others call for release of arrested Lekki tollgate protesters

Campaigns are beginning to mount for the immediate release of about 30 persons who have already been arrested by the police at the Lekki Tollgate plaza.

Some persons have defied the police and government orders not to gather for any protests citing security reports against it.

But even with the presence of policemen as early as Friday evening about 12 hours ahead of the protests, some protesters still stormed the area today to challenge the order.

One of those already in custody of the police is a comedy merchant Debo Macaroni who was picked up at the tollgate as early as 9am on Saturday.

Social, Economic Rights Project (SERAP), on Saturday called for the immediate release of the persons already arrested.

“We urge Nigerian authorities, police to immediately and unconditionally release EndSARS protesters detained simply for peacefully exercising their human rights.”

“Authorities should also cease harassing people peacefully exercising their human rights.”

SERAP also called on the United Nations to call on the Nigerian government to stop the alleged crackdown on protesters.
