Gunmen reportedly kidnap Army colonel along Abuja-Kaduna Highway

A Nigerian Army colonel has been abducted by bandits after running into an ambush along Abuja-Kaduna Highway, Peoples Gazette reports.

According to the Peoples Gazette, Colonel SB Onifade who was not in uniform was abducted on September 27 around 3am near the Olam Farm axis of the highway.

The report stated further that the colonel has not been found and no arrests have been made in connection with the abduction.

The Nigerian Military has reportedly alerted its personnel against making non-essential road trips due to the rising level of insecurity.

The Abuja-Kaduna highway has become notoriously dangerous for travellers as kidnappers and bandits prowl the road, attacking at will despite several interventions from security forces.

Nigeria’s northeast and northwest have become overrun by Boko Haram and Islamic State terrorists, Bandits, armed Fulani herdsmen and several other local or ethnic militia.

The insecurity has forced travellers to abandon the highway for the train service running between Nigeria’s capital Abuja and the commercial city of Kaduna in the northwest. This has often put a strain on the train service which is just beginning to pick up.

A spokesperson for the Nigerian Army did not immediately return requests seeking comments about Mr. Onifade’s abduction Monday afternoon, Peoples Gazette reports.
