Police deputy commissioner dies from COVID-19 in Edo

The rampaging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may have hit Edo state police rank as a serving deputy commissioner of police has reportedly died of the disease.

The unnamed police officer was said to be in-charge of Criminal Investigation Bureau in zone 5.

Dr. Patrick Okundia, Edo state Commissioner for health who confirmed the development on Wednesday said: “We had an unfortunate situation of a 57-year-old police officer who passed on yesterday (Tuesday).

“The story is not very clear on how he got the infection, but he developed some illnesses.

“Initially, there was no evidence of suspicion for Coronavirus disease but when the symptoms started getting worse he was treated at the Police clinic.

“And about two days before that death, our surveillance team were called to have a look him… And it was in that process they took the sample and sent it to the laboratory while he continued with his drugs.

“He (policeman) was placed on self isolation. However, the result came out and it was positive.

“At the time, we could get to his house to move him out, the man had died that same day.

“It is really unfortunate and the result came after the man had died.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had in its general fact sheet of COVID-19 situation report on April 21 indicated that Edo recorded a new death, taking morality tally in the state to two.

Besides, the fact sheet as at April 20 showed that the state had 15 confirmed confirmed cases and seven discharged.
