Lassa fever claims one life in Katsina

The executive secretary, Katsina State primary health care agency, Dr. Shamsudeen Yahaya, on Wednesday, confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state, revealing that the disease claimed the life of a pregnant woman on Tuesday night.

Yahaya who made the revelation at a press conference in Katsina said the deceased resided at Kwarin Yashe Village in Kusada Local Government Area of the state.

He did not reveal the identity of the woman.

Dr. Yahaya said another woman who was tested positive of the disease, was already undergoing treatment in Kankia General hospital.

The state Commissioner for health, Engineer Yakubu Danja, however, said the state had adopted strategies to curb the spread of the disease in the state.

He disclosed that screening centres have been created at various points while a team known as the ‘Disease Surveillance team’ has been created in all the thirty-four local government areas of the state to report any case of the disease.

The commissioner further disclosed that Islamic clerics and opinion leaders have also been contacted to sensitize residents about the disease.
