Gunmen Ambush Police Squad, Kill Eight
Kidnappers on the trail of a kidnap victim who escaped from their den have ambushed a police anti-kidnap squad in the Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing two policemen.
The attacks, according to eyewitnesses, also claimed the lives of six other civilians who were caught in the crossfire on Gella Road where the ambush occurred.
Gella, the capital town of the Mubi South LGA, is less than 40 kilometre away from the Nigerian-Cameroonian border.
A week ago, gunmen in a commando style, operation had ambushed the divisional police officer in charge of the police station in the area and abducted the DPO.
A manhunt by the police to find the abductors of the DPO, Ahidjo Muhammad, had led the police nowhere near the kidnappers who had demanded N50m.

In the latest attack, the police said the men were going after some kidnappers following the escape of one of the victims from their den who gave the police useful information about the whereabouts of his abductors.
But residents disclosed that the ambush of the policemen occurred between 7pm and 8pm after they had allegedly taken a suspect to their station and were on their way back to Gella.
One of the residents, Hamza Gella, said, “It was while they (police) were returning to their duty post that they were ambushed by the gunmen who killed the driver of the police van and one other police officer.
“The gunmen also opened fire on other road users at the time of the attacks, abducting six travellers on that road.”
The state police command spokesman, Suleiman Nguroje, who confirmed the death of two policemen, declined to state the casualty figure of the civilians caught in the crossfire.
“Our men laid ambush for the kidnappers, but they were counter-ambushed by the kidnappers who fired at them, killing two.”
