In 7 days, VIO impounds 105 unroadworthy vehicles in Abuja
The Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, Abuja, on Tuesday, said it has impounded 105 unroadworthy, unpainted commercial vehicles in Abuja.
It was gathered that the VIO, under its Directorate of Road Traffic Service, DRTS, taskforce team and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command are working on the directives given by the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, to rid the city of unroadworthy and rickety vehicles.
Speaking with DAILY NIGERIAN correspondent, on Tuesday, the head of the taskforce team, Auwal Nakata, said the DRTS was on a daily routine operation, adding that about 60 unpainted commercial vehicles were impounded last week.
According to him, some of these vehicles are suspected to be involved in one-chance robbery and other criminal offenses.
“On Monday September 23, more than 45 commercial vehicles again were arrested for being rickety and unpainted, making a total of 105 from last week.

“These entire vehicles that were arrested are risking the lives of the motorists and their passengers.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of lives and properties on the roads,” Mr Nakata said.
Mr Nakata also revealed that a unit within the police’s Criminal Investigation Department, CID, was created, specifically, to combat ‘one chance’, adding that so far, over 100 suspected one chance perpetrators had been arrested and their vehicles confiscated.
The head of DRTS taskforce team, however, advised drivers to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy, as well as their documents and driver license.
He further advised commercial drivers to also avoid reckless driving, saying that “do not drink alcohol and drive.”
The Chairman, Road Transports Employee Association of Nigeria, Mpape/Jabi Branch, Suleiman Kehinde, commended the taskforce for trying to rid Abuja of rickety vehicles and bad drivers, saying that a lot of commercial drivers misbehave.
“I’m still pleading with the task force to be of assistance at the times of need,” he pleaded.
