The Attack On Wurma Village: Why Are We Damn Silent? By Saleh Bature

The story of attack on Wurma village in Katsina state on Tuesday 27th August, 2019, justifies the claim that the armed forces and other branches of the security apparatus in Nigeria had been severely weakened by criminals operating in the North-West.

The soulless bandits had a field day committing the worst attrocities against the village they held captive for more than 3 hours. The people in Wurma village had witnessed the darkest moment in their lives on that ominous day. The bandits entered the village on their motor circles in hundreds. “They operated for about three hours with nobody to challenge them,” Reuters reported an eye witness account of the debauchery as saying. “The attackers also took pregnant women, children, babies, sheep, goats and food, it added.

The ferocity of the assault and the number of hours the bandits spent dehumanizing the helpless victims at the village shows that there is something wrong with our security architecture. We lack a rapid response mechanism to early detection and repel on attack. The bitter consequences of this is the lose of confidence by our people of government inability to fight crime. When civilians and our soldiers are killed by Boko Haram terrorists in Maiduguri, kidnappers abduct people along Abuja-Kaduna highway and villages are attacked and their women raped by bandits, there is a tendency for people to feel dejected. Unfortunately, this may embolden the criminals and weaken the spirit of the people and our security men and women who pay the supreme sacrifice.

A new angle to these incessant attacks was the raping of house wives and young girls in front of their husbands and parents. The sermon on Friday by an lmam in a Katsina mosque corroborating the new psychological tactics adopted by the devilish bandits to weaken the spirit of their victims has gone viral on the social media.

This is an extremely difficult and frightening situation for our people. For this reason, We should come out in unison to tell truth to power. The situation is so appalling. This is the time in which silence is not golden. Enough of these senseless killings! Each one of us has a duty to do something to stop the spate of killings in the country. Wurma is just one out of many such villages in the North West that are under the onslaught of the killer bandits. We should not keep mum because it doesn’t affect us. We would not know, we May be the next victims.
