Gunmen ambush deputy governor’s convoy, kill 5 policemen

Suspected armed robbers on Tuesday attacked the convoy of the deputy governor of Nasarawa State, Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, killing five policemen.

The attack occurred around 4pm when the deputy governor was returning from Abuja to to the state capital, Lafia.

DAILY NIGERIAN reliably gathered the robbers laid ambushed on the convoy, killed the policemen and took away all their rifles.

A security source told this newspaper that the convoy was alerted that robbery operation was taking place at a place called Lilli near Nasarawa Eggon.

“After waiting for a while, one of the police vehicles volunteered to clear the road for them. Unfortunately, they fell into the robbers’ trap. They opened opened fire on them and took away all their four rifles,” said the source.

Usman Samaila, spokesman for the Nasarawa Police Command, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lafia.

Mr Samaila, an assistant superintendent of police, however did not give detail of the attack, saying the commissioner of Police, Bola Longe, had led a team of officers to the scene to assess the situation.

“As I speak with you now, the Commissioner of Police, the Deputy Commissioner Operations and other high ranking officers of the command have gone to the scene of the incident,” Mr Samaila added.
