Police smashes kidnap syndicate in Niger

Police personnel attached to the Operation Puff Adder have smashed an alleged kidnap syndicate in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

This followed the arrest of one Aminu Haruna of the Tambari village in Rafi, who is said to be one of the arrow heads of the syndicate.

It was learnt that the suspect and six members of his group had kidnapped a farmer in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, and collected N6m ransom from his family.

Haruna confessed to have collected the sum of N600,000 as his share of the ransom.

Northern City News gathered in Minna on Thursday that the suspect and his accomplices were responsible for the kidnap of innocent Nigerians in different parts of the country.

In an interview with our correspondent, Haruna said, “We have informants in some states where we operate. They alert us of the movements of potential targets and we share the proceeds with them when we succeed.

“We kidnapped the Ibadan man and a ransom of N6m was paid; my own share was N600,000 and I never knew that the police could trace me to Niger State.”

The spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, Mohammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had confessed to the crime.

Abubakar said Haruna’s house was searched and the N600,000 was recovered.

He noted that the suspect would be arraigned in court as soon as police investigations were completed.
