Missing UniJos student found dead in hostel

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student of the University of Jos, Mercy Naan who was declared missing by her parents.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Tyopev Matthias Terna who confirmed the development in a statement on Monday said the police received a distress call from the Security Department, University of Jos that on the same date, some students of the institution raised the alarm over an unusual odour coming out from Room number 23 Zion Hostel in Naraguta, University of Jos.

Tyopev stated that a combined team, comprising of the Police, the University Security and the Medical personnel of the University were mobilised to the scene of the crime.

He said that the suspected hostel door was forced opened and the motionless body of the 200 level student from the Department of Marketing was seen and recovered to the University Clinic.

According to him, the student was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty at the University Clinic and her corpse deposited at the Anatomy Mortuary of the same University for Autopsy.

The Spokesman added that the detectives of the Plateau State Police Command have since commenced investigation to unravel the mystery behind the unfortunate death.

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered that two men, Zacheaus Solomon and Ogedengbe Kennedy be remanded in prison for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl.

Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the pleas of the defendants, ordered that they should be remanded in Kirikiri Prison and the case file sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

She adjourned the case until June 6.

The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, assault and defilement, NAN reports.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Asp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence sometime in 2014 at Igando, a suburb in Lagos.

Emuerhi alleged that the defendants sexually assaulted the girl.

“The duo unlawfully and indecently assaulted the 9-year-old girl and defiled her.

He said the case was reported to the police at Ikotun Police Division by the girl’s mother.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Sections 135, 137 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 and Sections 10 and 27 of the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State.
