Bandits attack Birnin Gwari village, kill 2 policemen, 2 civilians

Armed bandits on Saturday killed four people, including two policemen and two civilians at Kakangi village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The bandits first attacked a police outpost at 5:00pm and then opened fire at a gathering of villagers attending mass wedding of 17 couples.

Armed bandits on Saturday April 6, 2019 killed four people, including two policemen and two civilians and injured many others at Kakangi village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Six people, including young children, sustained various degree of injuries and are receiving treatment at General Hospital Birnin-Gwari.

After the stampede, the bandits set some shops and stalls on fire, looted others and carted away foodstuff and many motorcycles.

A resident who escaped to Gagumi village, about 20 kilometres from Kakangi, said: “we were sitting in front of the police station and suddenly the bandits started shooting sporadically. I jumped over the fence to escape.

“As I fled, I noticed thick smoke billowing from several locations of the village.”

On Friday, the bandits also attacked Udawa village in Birnin Gwari, killing five people and rusling hundreds of cattle.

Security situation in the area worsened due to renewed spate of armed banditry and kidnapping, leading to mass exodus from vulnerable villages.

Many communities particularly along Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road had deserted their homes and took refuge in other places.

Police are yet to speak on the two incidents.
