EU, ECOWAS observers meet Buratai over security preparations

Election observation delegations of the European Union and the Economic Community of West Africa have met with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Abuja, to assess the security preparations ahead of Saturday’s governorship and Houses of Assembly elections in the country.

The foreign observers, led by the EU Deputy Chief Election Observer, Hannah Roberts, said members of the delegations had moved to most of the 36 states and their visit was to assess the security preparations ahead of Saturday.

She said, “It is important for us to understand some of the security challenges you have and the way you see things going forward.

“After the elections, the EU mission will release its final report which will contain our recommendations.”

Buratai said post-election crisis was an issue Nigeria needed to take proactive measures on, adding that the 1967 Civil War was caused by such post-election violence.

He said, “Having learnt our lessons from history, the military will be proactive and ready to support the police and other security agencies to prevent any crisis after the general elections.”
