Data visualisation: Election violence in Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, others

Election violence marred voting process in some polling units across Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa and Anambra states on Saturday.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Zubairu Muazu told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that nine persons were arrested for allegedly burning and destroying election materials at Okota.

Violence was also recorded in Ijora, Alakara Mushin, Alagomeji, Yaba and Shomolu areas of Lagos State.

In Rivers, Akuku-Turu, Bonny, Asari-Turu, Okrika, Degema, Eleme and Abobema areas experienced varying degrees of violence which affected voting.

Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni said “hoodlums”, dressed in military uniforms, also invaded some polling stations in the Okrika area of the state and snatched voting materials.

The 16 Brigade of Nigerian Army in Yenogoa, Bayelsa arrested 15 armed thugs during the presidential and National Assembly elections in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom, Mr Mike Igini, confirmed the pockets of ballot boxes snatching in the  state, and agreed that security was a major challenge in the conduct of elections in the state.

In Osun, NAN gathered that some hoodlums suspected to be political thugs allegedly set a section of INEC building ablaze along with some election materials.
