NSA commends Navy over clampdown on illegal maritime security outfits’

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd), has commended Nigerian Navy (NN) at curbing illegal maritime security activities across the country.
Navy Spokesman, Commodore Suleman Dahun, said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, that Monguno gave the commendation in a letter to Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.

He said that the NSA acknowledged the efforts of the Navy at denying illegal maritime security outfits freedom of action and operation.

Dahun recalled that Navy ship, JUBILEE, recently raided and sealed an illegal institution, Merchant Seaman Academy at Ikot Ataudo, Uwa West in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

He said that it was discovered that students of the institution wore uniforms that bore semblance to those of the navy and underwent “dubious maritime training’’.

The spokesman said that the raid led to the arrest of one Mr Adam Pius, who was the institution’s
proprietor, three of his staff and 19 students, all of whom were handed over to the Police.

“The Navy is closely monitoring the activities of the Merchant Seaman Academy and other illegal maritime security outfits with a view to enforcing the proscription order of Office of the National Security Adviser.

“In view of this, the Navy is hereby alerting the public not to fall prey to any of these illegal maritime security outfits,” he said.
