FRSC certifies 2,514 vehicles for election duty in Kaduna

The Kaduna Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Wednesday it has deployed 1,014 personnel to support other security agencies in ensuring hitch-free general election.

The Sector Commander, Umar Ibrahim made this known at the opening of a one-day workshop for officers and marshals of the Corps, on FRSC roles and responsibilities during the elections.

Ibrahim also said that the command has certified 2,514 vehicles and drivers that would be used to move election materials and personnel across the state.

He explained that the main goal of the workshop was to educate members of the Corps on the standard operation procedure and detailed instructions on their roles and responsibilities while on election duty.

“One of our key roles is vehicle and driver’s safety check to ensure that vehicles to be used are road worthy and the driver is licensed.

“This is to ensure that there is no delay or obstruction while moving election materials and personnel.

“We are also expected to restrict vehicular movements where necessary in conjunction with other security agencies and provide security for electoral materials from take-off point to respective destinations.

“We will also support other security agencies to ensure orderliness at polling units and collation Centres, as well as educate and guide electorates when necessary,” Ibrahim said.

He called on members of the Corps to exhibit high sense of professionalism, operate within the law, shun all forms of gratification and avoid partisanship.

Earlier, FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi explained that aside traffic management and safety administration, FRSC in conjunction with other security agencies would be involve in crowd control and maintenance of order.

“As the lead agency in road traffic administration and safety management in the country, FRSC is a member of the inter-agency committee on election security.

“The Corps is also a member of the inter-ministerial committee on logistics for the 2019 general election with specific responsibilities of ensuring safe and free movement of elections vehicles, materials and personnel,” he said.

Oyeyemi, represented by Corps Commander Albanus Nwachukwu, said that the training was crucial in ensuring that FRSC diligently carry out the responsibilities entrusted to it by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He urged officers and marshals of the Corps to face the task with utmost dedication, honesty, care and commitment devoid of partisanship.

Also speaking, Abdulkadir Wambai of the Department of State Security, Kaduna, noted that the country’s security infrastructure was overstretched, thus the need for collaboration among security agencies to ensure a hitch-free election.

Wambai added that FRSC manpower, skills and expertise would contribute to a great deal in ensuring peaceful election and prevent all forms of electoral offenses such as rigging, vote buying and thuggery, among others.

Similarly, Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Ahmad Abdur-Rahman said that election in Nigeria is like a war, and a do-or-die affair for the politicians.

Abdur-Rahman, represented by Assistat Police Commissioner in charge of Kakuri Area Command, said necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure peaceful election.

The commissioner, however, warned that all perpetrators of election violence if caught, would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
