2019 Elections: AIG urges policemen to operate within law

Policemen to be deployed for the coming elections have been directed to operate within the law and respect people’s rights.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 8, Mr Adekunle Oladunjoye, gave the directive on Friday in Lokoja while declaring open a two-day workshop on “Role of Policemen in Election’’.

He urged them to mind their conduct during the elections, saying that the present leadership of the force was not ready to condone professional misconduct.

Oladunjoye reminded them that it was incumbent on them to protect the lives and rights of all citizens irrespective of social status and political affiliations.

Also speaking, Mr Rommy Mom, a Commissioner in the Police Service Commission said that the workshop was organised to update officers and men on the recent changes in elections’ guidelines and electoral laws.

He said that police performance in previous elections would be reviewed with a view to come up with security measures to adopt for the coming elections.

The commissioner said that the Police Service Commission would also monitor the conduct of men and officers that would be deployed for the elections to ensure that they operate within the law.

Mom also said that toll-free lines would be provided to enable members of the public to lodge complaints with the police.

One hundred men and officers from Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi State commands of the Nigeria Police Force are participating in the workshop.
